8.5.2 can use dojo editor or CKeditor

If you are using 8.5.2 you can use the dojo rich text editor for a rich text field by specifying "use javascript control" in the field properties.
The dojo editor is better than the applet.
The CKEditor also is in 8.5.2 and is used by xpages. If you want to use it in classic web applications see the wiki article:
http://www.lotus.com/ldd/ddwiki.nsf/dx/Using_the_CKEditor_in_the_Classic_Web_Server
Looking at the code generated my give you an idea of what you need to do to connect your own editor.
